Artist Of The Week -- Meaghan Smith

Meaghan Smith’s first full-length recording sizzles with an ingenuous and passionate blend of 1930’s nostalgia and the freshness of 21st century innovation and perspective. From saucy to soulful, Take Me Dancing showcases Meaghan’s seemingly effortless vocal style, whether she is ripping it like Benny Goodman or baring her soul a la Edith Piaf.

Meaghan’s new songs dazzle with vocal stylings reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday and the lush arrangements crafted by producer Les Cooper brilliantly support the simple elegance of her lyrics. The sound combines the instrumentation of old jazz – complete with horns, strings and a big-band-swing-groove – with injections of modern sonic treats by the guest appearance of fabulously funky DJ Kid Koala. As you listen to Meaghan’s music, you sense that this is an artist just beginning to discover the talent that lies within her.

In the brief time that Meaghan has been pursuing her musical ambitions, she has already been recognized with nominations in her native Canada for two Nova Scotia Music Awards (“Best New Artist” and “Best Female Artist”) and a win for “Galaxie Rising Star” in 2005. She was a featured artist at the Atlantic Film Festival in 2007 and also collaborated with Rose Cousins and Jill Barber on a holiday cd (A New Kind of Light) with a noble purpose – support for the Maritime Food Banks.
